Fire Protection Questions, Answered

Straight answers about fire inspections, testing schedules, codes and compliance in Arizona, from a team that has spent more than 25 years in fire protection.

Who enforces fire inspections in Arizona?

Your local fire department, called the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ). Arizona cities adopt the International Fire Code and NFPA standards, and each fire department sets how inspections are reported. AZ Firetech handles that reporting for you.

What NFPA standards apply to my building?

The main ones are NFPA 72 for fire alarms, NFPA 25 for sprinklers, fire pumps and related water systems, NFPA 10 for extinguishers, NFPA 101 for emergency and exit lighting, and NFPA 96 and 17A for commercial kitchen hood systems.

How often do fire systems need to be inspected?

It depends on the system. Exit lights are tested monthly, sprinklers have quarterly and annual inspections, fire alarms are tested annually, kitchen hoods every six months, and backflows annually. Our property dashboard lays it all out.

Who is responsible for fire inspections, the owner or the tenant?

The building owner is ultimately responsible, but leases often assign some systems to tenants (a restaurant hood, for example). We help property managers sort out who owns what and keep everyone on schedule.

How quickly can you schedule an inspection?

Usually within days. Urgent issues like a sprinkler impairment or alarm trouble get same day or next day service whenever possible.

What is in your inspection report?

Every report lists what was inspected, what passed, each deficiency with a photo and location, what is urgent versus what can be planned, and a clear quote for fixes. You receive it within 24 hours.

What happens after a deficiency is found?

We explain it, quote it, fix it once you approve, retest it and update the record your fire department requires. Read more in our post on what to do after a failed fire inspection.
